Rusland Valley Loop & Hawkshead

Distance: approx 25 miles

A few more short climbs in this ride before arriving in the flat valley bottom of the Rusland Pool. This is rural South Cumbria at its quietest and most quaint.

Rusland is well known for its ancient mixed forests of Oak, Hazel and other species used in past times for coppicing, charcoal burning, woodwork and eventually bobbins for the Lancashire cotton industry.

You can cycle on to Hawkshead a famous Lakeland village which is rather a tourist mecca. But the roads leading to and from the village are relatively quiet. There is one steep hill which may be walked up as we head away from Hawkshead through Grizedale Forest.
